Yup, been told by another tec with same scanner he has the same problem the update
is too big and fails every time, managed too do other updates no problems -

do you have a download limit with your provider... -

With a backup this is no issue, but users never ceate backups to SD or USB/PC and shout here if something fails.

what is the free space on the device ?
Have you installed other software ?
Clear cache, delete old and unused PDF'S or the extra apps and historcal scan data....... Like on a phone with Android...

There is nothing to do with backup its the BMW Software problem as its too big and if you internet speed is slow that is what will happen the best idea is to download it at night time when every one is a sleep few people using internet so you have good speed or, look for a good internet connection with fast speed and you will not have this problem............By the way from which country are you downloading it..............?
